What you wear can be a huge confidence booster when you get it right. The tricky thing is, there are so many options, trends come and go, and you change a lot too. Your signature style should make you feel good and be a source of comfort for when you step into the world. It’s like your armor that only works when you feel like you’re workin’ it.
WHAT IS A SIGNATURE STYLE?
Essentially, it’s your uniform. It is the core of your personal style. The staples that make up your wardrobe. The pieces that people see in the store and immediately think of you. As you create a wardrobe, you start to see your signature style come through. From the materials you love to the pieces you feel the best in, each of these details will ultimately become a part of your signature style.
WHY DEFINE A SIGNATURE STYLE?
With fast fashion being at the forefront of attainable clothing, we’re all starting to realize the inconvenience of low quality pieces. Many people are moving away from cheap and trendy while putting more focus on high quality pieces. But quality is not a simple thing to get. It comes in small batches and the price is not friendly for every budget.. If you aren’t clear on what you really need.
We’re all spending money on clothes. So why not take the time to learn what you really love? When you have a signature style, you’ll be able to confidently purchase high quality pieces. You’ll be able to curate a wardrobe based on materials and pieces you love. This will prevent you from having to make frivolous purchases in the future on cheap clothes that don’t really make you feel your best.
HOW TO CREATE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE
STOP PLANNING FOR A LIFETIME
When you’re thinking about what type of clothing you want to wear, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. It can feel like each piece you buy has to not only fit your style right now, but also have the ability to mold with you through every stage of life. Essentially, it’s as if creating a signature style is the same as creating an identity. You have to remember, trends change, clothes change, and you change. So when you’re thinking about your signature style, don’t think about what it says about you today or whether it will fit you forever. Think about what feels good right now and find the pieces that fit that.
Pinterest is the ultimate window shopping tool. It’s a great help when you want to see what your signature style could be without actually committing to anything. So here’s how to do it:
Make a style board.
Scavenge all the different style boards Pinterest has to offer and pin literally everything that catches your eye.
Take note of any recurring patterns within your pins: colors, styles, pieces, etc.
Delete anything that isn’t cohesive with the majority of the board.
From what’s left, make a detailed list of the pieces you love and words you can use to describe your signature style.
UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY TYPE
When something doesn’t fit right, it can make you feel like your body is the problem when really the style may just not work. The beauty of fashion today is that every style and body type is considered when designing new pieces. Don’t fall into the negative body image trap. Just look through body type guides and make sure you’re getting an accurate idea of what your body type really is. When in doubt, just try stuff on! Even just five minutes can give you a good idea of how each piece feels.
THINK ABOUT HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME
We often will create our style around what we think we need rather than what we actually do. Most of the guides you’ll find have “essential wardrobe pieces” to try an give a quick fix for your style mishaps. The flaw in these guides is they don’t give an example of the individuality that is necessary to consider when creating a signature style. Your experiences, how you spend your day, and who you want to be come through whether that’s your goal or not. To create a signature style that truly works for you, you have to consider how you spend the majority of your days and find pieces that suit that.
LOOK AT WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
Actually take out every single clothing item you own. Remove anything that’s outdated or has holes, rips, etc. With what’s left, try it on. Take note of the fit and feel of the pieces you love and hold onto them. For anything that doesn’t feel amazing, set it aside or get rid of it. Holding onto things that bring you down can hold you back from having a wardrobe that really makes you feel good. After all, your signature style is nothing if not perfect for you in every way.
LET GO OF THE “INSTAGRAM WORTHY” MENTALITY
It’s easy to feel pressure with social media. It can make you feel like you need to buy something you don’t love just “for the gram.” That, and seeing other people share their perfectly cultivated signature styles can start to make your style feel lackluster in comparison. If you create a signature style you love based on pieces that work for you, you’ll be able to feel confident regardless of what other people are buying. If you feel confident, Instagram will love you no matter what you’re in.
